Caesar’s Rebellion (1712 – 1762)
Length: 1.5 hrs | Fridays at 7:30pm | Meet up on the stairs at the Museum of the American Indian
Caesar’s Rebellion picks up after the rebellion of 1712 when the political leaders of New York pass more laws to restrict Black movement. The port city of New York has shifting political and class divisions that shape the environment of the enslaved. Although stricter laws have been passed to limit Black life, the population of enslaved Africans continues to increase as does poor European indentures creating a large and loosely organized underclass. The result is another rebellion in 1741 known as “the Great Negro Plot”. Unlike most rebellions in the colonies or West Indies, the conspirators were tried in the New York Supreme Court which was documented in an extensive journal by one of the justices creating an insightful look into slavery, colonial law, class, and politics.

CIVIC HALL TEAM UPDATES
As we work through the merger of Civic Hall and Civic Hall Labs and focus our efforts on the development of Civic Hall @ Union Square, and on the ramping up of a new digital learning center that will be central to that facility, some of the staff roles at Civic Hall are going through substantial changes. Unfortunately, sometimes those decisions mean saying goodbye to people who we love and respect.
We want to take a moment to recognize the contributions of Olivia Snarski, Membership Engagement director, Tamika Taylor, Interim Events Director, and Nick Masercola, Communications Associate, all of whom transitioned out of Civic Hall a week ago. Though we are sorry to see them go, we hope and expect that they will continue to participate in the Civic Hall community as members.

CIVIC HALL @ UNION SQUARE UPDATE AND REQUEST
As you may already know, as part of the public review process, at the end of February Community Board 3 voted unanimously, 36 to 0, to support the Civic Hall @ Union Square project.
The next stage of this process involves a review by and public hearing with Borough President Gale Brewer. She has not only been a huge supporter of this project since the beginning, but also been an active partner with Civic Hall. If you would like to express your support for the project and thanks to Gale, please take a few minutes to email the Borough President at: info@manhattanbp.nyc.gov.
On behalf of everyone at Civic Hall, we want to express our thanks to all the Civic Hall members, partners and friends who have come out during this early part of the process. Your voices and stories have made a tremendous impact.
While the public process will still take several months to get to completion, we are well on our away to building a future expanded home for Civic Hall and the city’s first collaborative digital skills training center. We are looking forward to moving forward together!

GETTING TO 80% - BUILDING TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE NATIONAL VOTER TURNOUT & PARTICIPATION ACROSS AMERICA
Tuesday, February 13. 6.00pm – 8.00pm ET
AppNexus, 28 West 23rd Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY, 10010
On February 13, AppNexus are hosting a tech talk with Democracy Works - a NYC-based team of software developers, public policy wonks, and civic organizers building the tools needed to upgrade the infrastructure of our democracy and improve the voting experience for voters and election officials alike. Their vision is straightforward: make voting a simple, seamless experience for all Americans so that no one misses an election.
To this end, Democracy Works developed TurboVote, a web application built on a microservices architecture that helps you register to vote, request an absentee ballot, and receive election reminders; they work with local election offices throughout the US to collect, clean, and standardize a national polling place dataset (among other things); and they provide an API in front of a detailed calendar of upcoming state, special, and local elections. Recently, TurboVote integrated with AppNexus’ FIA alert hub to serve real-time, geo-targeted election reminders nationally.
This talk will explore Democracy Work’s products and strategic approach, and showcase opportunities to get involved.

LAST DAYS TO APPLY: CIVIC HALL ORGANIZERS-IN-RESIDENCE SPRING CYCLE APPLICATIONS OPEN
All the time in American public life, millions of people are in motion, seeking to engage elected officials and shift public opinion, forming and joining thousands of national and local groups. At the center of all of this activity are organizers, often working in isolation from home or in challenging settings like crowded coffee shops or impersonal co-working spaces, where they miss out on many forms of mutual support, including skill-sharing, connections and problem-solving.
Civic Hall, through the support of the Craig Newmark Foundation, wants to change that dynamic by offering individuals and small teams involved in organizing to defend democracy and civil rights free memberships in our collaborative community center, along with mentoring and support amplifying their messages across our platform.
The application deadline is January 24th – APPLY HERE

The Trustworthy Tech Partners program is an 8 week exploration of how ethical and responsible an organisation’s business and technology practices are, and whether it’s possible to demonstrate these. Any organisation working on a digital/internet product/service is welcome to take part, and the next program will start on November 20th, and we’d love to have some participants from the Civic Hall community. The program will take participants through exploring what they do today in terms of responsible practices, and what evidence can be provided to demonstrate trustworthiness to external folks (customers, investors, other stakeholders etc). It could take 2-4 hours a week over 8 weeks (depending on scale of organisation) and it’s also totally fine to timebox to, say, an hour a week, or to save up tasks to do in a batch on one day. More info in the program booklet (disregard the dates, these were for our UK program)
Key benefits of participation:
* pioneer a better tech sector which is responsible and trustworthy
* a structure to help you evaluate your current performance and spot opportunities for improvement
* feedback and support from independent confidential external advisors (about the program and other issues around responsible tech development!)
